How does the Dark Arts player play and win?

Defenders of Hogwarts · a practical answer for your next game.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Dark Arts chooses Explore or Replenish on its turn; it does not use the House Learn action. To win, secure all three Progress Tokens and assemble the required number of Dark Arts pawns at the assigned location simultaneously. Reaching the red zone alone does not win the game.

Based on the publisher’s rulebook ↗

Which actions can Dark Arts take?

Explore

Play a card and resolve movement and/or an unlocked effect. Dark Arts can cross obstacles but cannot enter Protected Areas.

Replenish

Revive stunned pawns, then draw to five. You cannot optionally discard cards during this action.

White effects are available from the start; orange and red effects unlock when the marker enters their colour zone. Cards played during the turn are discarded at its end.

What happens when Dark Arts bumps a House pawn?

  1. End a move on a House pawn’s space. If there is more than one House pawn, choose one to bump.
  2. Return the chosen House pawn to the Great Hall and your Dark Arts pawn to its off-board pool.
  3. Take that House’s Marker if you do not already hold it. Collecting all participating House Markers advances Dark Arts once, then returns those markers.
  4. Draw two acquisition cards, put one on top of your draw deck and the other at the bottom of the acquisition deck. This acquisition happens only once per turn, even after multiple bumps.

How many pawns must reach the final location?

The requirement depends on when you take the final Progress Token and the location card. It is not recalculated simply because the marker later advances.

When you take the location cardPawns together at the location
First red Event Space3
Next red Event Space2
Last Path space, if not already taken1
Example

You take the location card at the second red Event Space. One pawn reaching that location is not enough: you need two there together, plus all three Progress Tokens.

Does reaching the end of the track automatically win?

No. The final space starts the last-hand phase: draw up to five and stop using Replenish. Players still try to complete their victory conditions. If nobody does before the final hands run out, the game is a draw; the rulebook separately permits card effects and draw spaces.
